The Hobbyceram International School of decorative arts was founded in Milan, in 1986, by Mrs. Donatella Viggiani. The school is the largest porcelain painting school in Italy, and one of the most important in Europe with its 192 seminars every year and over 1000 people joining it.
The Hobbyceram International School is present, with its 17 subsidiaries,
in 7 countries: Italy, Spain, Germany, Switzerland, Thailand, England, Portugal and Lebanon. The school has many branches in Italy too: in Nova Milanese, Brescia, Varese, Roma, Cuneo, Trento, Torino and Reggio Emilia.
The school uses the cooperation of many wellknown porcelain artists,
coming from all over the world, to teach their special techniques, and this offers the opportunity to learn new ways of painting porcelain and to be updated on all new techniques.
The aim of the school is, in fact, to open the perspective of the local porcelain artists, bringing them in touch with different styles and cultures.
The school offers, during the year, short and intensive seminars, as well as classes for beginners or advanced students, that run on a longer period
(3-6 months).

OVERGLAZE PORCELAIN TECNIQUES
Traditional and designs techniques
Sandra Blakeway Parmenter is an English artist that started her porcelain painting career in Italy. She is now the Master teacher at the London branch of Hobbyceram International School of Decorative Arts.
Mrs. Parmenter’s style is classical and modern at the same time, her thin and precise outlinings accompany soft pastel toned colours.
To her students she teaches the freedom of art and the respect of all ancient compositions; with her, they all produce beautiful masterpieces.
Traditional techniques
Monica Revello, is the artist who won the VII Convention Azzurra in 2002.
She is one of the major italian artists and she specialized in ancient Flemish and Russian techniques.
Her beautiful dark lacquered backgrounds, the softness of ripe fruits, flowers which open themselves
to the first sun rays…..
Under the attentive guidance of Irene Schmidt we will discover all secrets of the
ancient Meissen Manufactory.
Having worked for the Meissen Manufactory itself as painter as well as restorer of old pieces,
with her it will be easy to approach floral as well as fruits motifs. Little details will complete all painted work.
Miniature flowers and landscapes
In one colour only or shaded in many different colours, in this class, we paint a landscape that, similar to the traditional Sevrès ones, will be finely painted. The miniature landscape can decorate little boxes or snuffboxes, dinner sets as well as other decorative pieces. Framed in a flower garland or at the center of a medaillon, the theme is treated with fine long tipped sable brushes, the colours are mixed in
a traditional way, with thick oil and turpentine. Miniature class also focuses on a flowers bouquet.
Impressionistic technique
Stephen Merlin Hayes is the perfect teacher to teach you the perfect way to paint a large piece.
The students will learn how to approach large plates, umbrella stands as well as vases. Roses, hydrangeas, poppies, dandelions and many other well known flowers as well as many sorts of fruit, will be the theme of these classes.
Stephen Hayes is used to teach to large classes. We do not have to forget, in fact, that he teaches in many universities in the United States and in Europe.
Square shaders techniques
Square shaders techniques are so called because of the large flat brushes which are used to paint with non drying mediums. It is important to mark soft brush strokes and clean colours layers. In this technique you can paint flowers as well as landscapes and fruits. Teachers of high professionality give square shaders technique lessons at our school, in between them, please note Svanhild Øvrebo with her wonderful winter landscapes and Grethe Solemslokk world-wide reknown, for her delicate salmon roses.
Portraits and animals
Teresita Sartori is the founder of one of the most important Italian porcelain painting schools. Her works,
published on many specialized magazines and books are winners of many prizes and awards.
Teresita Sartori catches with her brush the soul of the painted subjects so the glance of her portraits tells
the hard burden of life while the eyes of her animals catch the heart of the viewer with lights and reflects of an uncontaminated nature.
On a sable background porcelain painting is transparing itself in real “fresco”.
The softness of the base add delicacy to the painting stroke and the shine of the colour gets enbanced
by thousand sand grains. So, portrait and animals gain a new wonderful dimension.
Open oil techniques
All the freshness of spring flowers caught
with the soft american technique of Sonie Ames.
The sweetness of mystical gazes reproduces on fine porcelain rich renaissance scenarios.
Ede Finazzi, extraordinary artist, combines in her masterpieces fine brush strokes with non drying medium and perfect details painted with classical discipline.
Grisaille on gold
A special way to handle gold and silver. Patrizia Arvieri will teach you how to prepare wonderful richly decorated pieces. Dark coloured areas will balance the light spots where the gold will shine in all its beauty.
With the help of a thin brush you will be able to paint nice landscapes as well as unusual flowers or fruits.
The teacher, Patrizia Arvieri, has won many prizes all around the wordl including the prestigious Meissen Trophy.
In this season a special class will take place in London. Some subjects will be treated with the newer methodologies of overglaze pencils as well as watercolour painting on mat porcelain background always with a gold base.
The sepia shades of the grisaille are enlightened with touches of gold powder.
So the thaditional motifs of Patrizia Arvieri are stylized in brown and gold and acqure a new wonderful strength keeping the usual beautiful design.
MODERN TECHNIQUES
Scandinavian technique
Scandinavian technique is the latest and more modern of all porcelain techniques: with the use of abstract lines, lusters precious stones, and glass drops as well as metallic colours, this kind of painting also needs sand and chip off powders. Bright gold and rich colours complete the effect and are specially important in the finishing of jewels and small designer objects.

Design techniques with gold lusters, and pen work. At Hobbyceram school we teach all these modern techniques also combined with square shaders techniques and classical finishings.

Trompe l’oeil: semi precious stones and wood effects
In this class you will learn how to imitate perfectly malachite, lapislazzuli and turquoise. In the second class instead you will learn how to reproduce all sort of woods, briars and inlays. The results of both seminars, are wonderful compositions of hard stones and precious woods.
Trompe l’oeil: Cloth and tissue
Silks and brocades, velvets and laces are the wonderful effects that can be used as pure decorative motifs as well as complements for painting Icons and Renaissance portraits. It is incredible to be able to reproduce this soft cloth effect on porcelain..
Enamels on porcelain
Cathedral glass effects obtained with metal enamels on porcelain. Baroque or geometric motifs to create deepness and transparency.
Trompe-l’oeil : gems, jewelry, pearls and chains
Brooches, chains, lonely gems or framed ones are all basic elements of this class.
Particular attention will be given to the geometry of cut stones with their special way to reflect light. Pearls,
white or grey ones, and chains will complete your beautiful composition.
Gold leaf technique
Gold leaf applied on porcelain with special mediums recreates a wonderful and precious effect. So it can be used on flowers, and leaves, on clothes as well as on landscapes and water ponds…..
Gold finishing techniques – Intensive course
Many ways to finish all our painted objects: rimming, scrolling, banding or other nice decorations with bright and roman gold. Agathe etching,
reliefs and marbleizing will also be taught in this class.
Borders and banding
How to border your pieces with a fine, single or double line, how to finish your pieces with a golden touch.
Included in the fee, you will get a table wheel with arm rest to carry home.
Mosaic on porcelain
A fine mosaic finishing will complete and frame different motifs or will be decoration itself. The strong relief effect is obtained with the use of relief colours and mediums.
UNDERGLAZE TECHNIQUES
Porcelain and clay modelling
With clay or porcelain paste it is possible to create wonderful new shapes. Afterwards all pieces can be painted with underglaze enamels or with overglaze colours.
Cuerda seca – Enameling on red clay
§Colours are closed into a frame of manganese oxyde and, after firing, the colours will be highly in relief. You will then be able to produce geometrical as well as figurative motifs specially suited for outdoor pieces.
Copper enameling
In the basic class you will learn how to enamel on copper, how to use the different kinds of enamels and powders and how to create special effects with other materials as transparent or mat colours. You will also be taught notions of how to enamel round pieces as well as how to model special copper shapes. Notions will be also given for the cloisonné technique as well as other jewelry details.
OTHER TECHNIQUES
Wood painting
After the classical models of floral decoration we will paint on wood very richly. These motifs will be suited later to paint on furniture or mural paintings. A lot of attention will be given to the preparation of the base.
Seminar of photography
Photography is as a way to stop special moments, loved features, blooming flowers. A way to keep a good time from passing by, to hold a precious moment forever or even to fix on paper a model to reproduce on porcelain….
GLASS TECHNIQUES
Glass fusing
All the thousand possibilities of glass are exploited in this fusing glass class. Glass is coloured with different techniques and is melted with special shapes and together with different materials like copper, ceramic oxydes, glass frittes and stringers.
Glass-fusing Decoration
In this class your previous fused pieces will be painted and decorated with gold and lusters, gold and silver leaf and beautiful bright colours.
Scandinavian technique on glass
Modern interpretation of glass painting with many contrasts of shiny and mat surfaces. We will use lustres and gold for glass, mat as well as transparent glass colours. You will learn the immersion technique and the “feather effect” under glass, abstract as well as figurative results, for rich design creations.
